Friends became one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. The series won many awards and was nominated for 63 Primetime Emmy Awards. An instant hit from its debut, Friends was also very successful in the ratings, consistently ranking in the top ten in the final primetime ratings. It is now often regarded by critics to be one of the finest shows in television history.
The original treatment written to pitch the series to NBC said, in part, "...it's about friendship because when you're single and in the city, your friends are your family." Years later when Friends was featured on Time's list of "The 100 Best TV Shows of All-Time", it was said, "the well-hidden secret of this show was that it called itself Friends, and was really about family".
The theme song, by the Rembrandts, says it all - "I'll be There for You". It expresses the unconditional loyalty that the six main characters had towards each other over the years.
